Review & Preview: 7/10/16

I’m going to try something new in hopes of making it a recurring post: a weekly post that features a review of last week’s blogs, a preview of upcoming posts and a random assortment of food-related thoughts, discoveries, and experiences that happen between posts. My hope is that this will serve an “in case you missed it” purpose, as well as give you a glimpse of what will be in store for the week ahead.

REVIEW
This past week was a fun week for me, catching up with my large, noisy family at our annual reunion and celebrating the 4th of July! It’s amazing how easy it is to write about food that is accompanied by good times. This past week’s blogs included a recap of the reunion and recipes for two side dishes: coleslaw and baked beans. IN BETWEEN
I love it when my mom tells me food-related things about when she was growing up. One of those things came up a few weeks ago, and I had the opportunity to ask her to show me how to make Egg Coffee. I hope to try and make it myself soon and share much more about it in a blog. For now, suffice it to say, it was smooth and delicious.

A couple of “firsts” happened today … the first red tomato sighting in my garden (a day that makes everyone ask “are we having BLT’s this week?”), and I tried my first Banh Mi sandwich! Our town hosted its second-annual arts festival today. It’s still in its growing stages, but on a nice Sunday afternoon, it’s fun to see artists with local roots display their work. Throw in a few food trucks (thus the Vietnamese sandwich) and some live music, and you draw a nice crowd. In a couple years, we’ll be wishing it wasn’t so crowded!

PREVIEW
We ate our way through the Lynlake neighborhood in Minneapolis this weekend, so I’ve got some foodventures to share with you this week. As for recipes, my editor/son and I will be experimenting with the next installment of our #MakeMeatballsGreatAgain series with a Buffalo Chicken version. If we’re very lucky, there will be a successful Sangria experiment. If we’re unlucky, we will still have Sangria!  Also, I’m making a family favorite, Italian Roast Beef, that brings back many fond memories of my mother-in-law and her gift-giving prowess.

GRATITUDE
Finally, I’d like to end these new weekly posts with something very special and important to me: a Bible verse. So, this week I choose:

“Oh give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: for His mercy endureth forever.” Psalm 136:1

I think this verse is appropriate for my first choice as it is the second part of the table prayer that I grew up praying three times a day, every day and is also the same prayer I have taught my children. If you think about the word “good”, we often think it means “okay” or “mediocre” when actually, throughout the Bible, it refers to things being “as God intended”. When God created the world, he said “It is good.” It changes our perspective doesn’t it? If my food, my writing or my effort is “good”, I am happy.

From the farm in Alta ... to college in Ames ... to the suburbs of Des Moines in Waukee ... I am an Iowa girl through and through. I married the cute, but quiet, guy who made me laugh out loud in Statistics class and we have two awesome, but terribly sarcastic, boys. In 1999, I quit my research job to be home with those active boys. Staying home allowed me to spend more time preparing meals, trying new recipes and striving to serve healthier options for my family. I love trying new things, traveling, gardening, reading and clean countertops. I love baseball (watching, not playing) and concession stands. Choosing a favorite food is impossible but if I was forced to pick just one, it would be pie! I thank God that He has led me to this place. Here's to a new adventure and hopes that others will be able to use what I post to discover the benefits of family meals and living a picnic life.

    1. The easiest way to see them is to become an e-mail subscriber to my blog. There is a box on the left side that says “Follow”. If you click that, it will ask for your e-mail address and then you will receive an e-mail each time I post something new. If you don’t want all the e-mails, I fully understand … just thought I’d mention it!
